How to season a Cast Iron Skillet?

Many people have asked how to season a new set of cast iron skillets? Reasonable question. If they are brand new and of fair to good quality I would temper them first in a 200 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove them (or one) allow to cool a bit. Add vegetable/canola oil your choice, coat the entire interior using a paper towel rub the oil inside well. Be sure to shut your oven off. I personally store my cast iron skillets in the oven middle rack. However, before pre heating oven they come out!!! Store them in a cool dry spot. The key is keep the cast iron skillet greased up. For cleaning I use very hot water and a soft brush and dry out the skillet completely. Re-grease it with oil for the next use. I hope this may help you out. I use cast iron skillets daily for main dishes, desserts, vegetable sides, corn bread, a multitude of baking uses. Good Luck with yours. You will love them as much as I do!!!

In closing I wish you “Good Health”.

  1. Dang I lost my comment, I accidentally hit the back button! Anyways, I always wash mine with hot water and brush, then set on a hot stove top to completely dry out. After it’s cooled, I add a thin layer of oil. I like the tip of putting in the oven if you forget to wash and dry immediately, although I try not too! 🙂
